Larsen began collating ideas for what would become his 2017 follow up album Resolute. He recorded impromptu voice memos on his phone, architecting a primitive framework for the songs. As he combed through hundreds of files, Larsen holed up in different locales, whether it be a cottage in Scotland, an apartment in Spain, or an army bunker back in Australia. These days, Stu Larsen lives out of a suitcase. You might find him somewhere between his native Australia, Spain or Japan, before he picks up and sets off for the next destination.

“Believe it or not, I actually never thought I’d travel,” he laughs. “I was a shy kid. I didn’t want to talk to anyone. I thought, ‘I’m never going to leave this town. I’ll work a job here, and that’ll be it.’ I got a small taste of traveling at some stage and fell in love with seeing the world. When I met Mike Rosenberg [aka Passenger], he needed someone to join him on the road. I said, ‘Yes’ seven years ago. It’s pretty amazing to think that this little shy ginger-headed kid is somehow playing music around the globe!”

In support of 2014’s appropriately titled Vagabond, Larsen brought his music to the masses with a spate of seemingly endless global tours. Larsen has gained fans around the world with sold-out shows in North America, Asia, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. As a result, the record transformed into something unexpected; frequenting popular (and fittingly-titled) Spotify playlists such as “Wild + Free” with fan favorites “San Francisco” cracking 2.5 million streams and standout track “Thirteen Sad Farewells” generating an impressive 11.5 million streams.  Along the way, Larsen began collating ideas for what would become his 2017 follow up album Resolute. He recorded impromptu voice memos on his phone, architecting a primitive framework for the songs. As he combed through hundreds of files, Larsen holed up in different locales, whether it be a cottage in Scotland, an apartment in Spain, or an army bunker back in Australia.

Long-time friend, producer and songwriter Luke Thompson eventually joined him at Passenger’s studio in Brighton to finish up the demos. With the ideas solidified, Larsen got more than he bargained for on a stopover for a wedding in Indonesia before formal recording took place in Australia…

I might’ve been shy, but I knew what I wanted,” he goes on. “Resolute sums me up at the moment. Vagabond summed up the last period of my life. It’s still who I am. I’m still a traveling nomad. However, I know a bit more about what I want, who I am, and what I’m okay with. It’s a very applicable word for this period of my life.”

Ultimately, Larsen shares an important message in Resolute: “I hope everyone can…” he leaves off. “Too often, we just switch off and don’t think enough. Hopefully, these songs can spark something positive in listeners. Live simply. Don’t worry about the excesses. I hope everyone can come together around this music.”
