Un’intervista Esclusiva alla Pianista e Compositrice statunitense ROBIN SPIELBERG

Robin Spielberg il cuore e l’anima del pianoforte interpretativo.
Talentuasa e famosa pianista, compositrice statunitense, nota per le sue performance espressive e liriche. Cresciuta a Maplewood, nel New Jersey, ha frequentato la Michigan State University e successivamente la Tisch School of the Arts all’Università di New York, laureandosi con il massimo dei voti. Ha pubblicato nel corso della sua pluriennale carriera diciassette albums, molti riconoscimenti conseguiti, centinaia di migliaia di copie vendute, concerti in tutti gli Stati Uniti d’America. I suoi lavori spaziano tra romanticismo e spiritualità veicolati principalmente dal pianoforte e talvolta con ensamble di altri strumenti, ci riportano alla musica tradizionale, classica, originale e popolare con uno stile del tutto personale maturato in anni di ricerca. E’ anche autrice, insegnante e portavoce dell’American Music Therapy Association essendo fermamente convinta nel potere curativo della musica. Attualmente vive in New Freedom, Pennsylvania. Ci ha gentilmente concesso in esclusiva un’intervista nella quale parla un po’ di sé e ovviamente della sua musica.
Ciao Robin e benvenuta su Jalo. Come stai?

Sei conosciuta come una talentuosa pianista, compositrice ed autrice. A quale età hai iniziato con la musica?
Ho iniziato a prendere lezioni di pianoforte all’età di sette anni.
Il tuo suono è unico, quando si ascolta i tuoi brani c’è musica classica, new age, minimalista. A quale genere musicale vorreste essere associata?
Hai detto bene. Vorrei anche aggiungere che la musica pop ha avuto una forte influenza su di me. Sono cresciuta non lontano da New York, i miei genitori amavano i musical di Broadway. Sono cresciuto ascoltando un sacco di colonne sonore di film e teatro. Penso che la musica che creo sia una mescola di tutte queste influenze. Amo una buona linea melodica, ma amo anche la struttura della musica classica, il feeling della musica impressionista e new age. Direi che creo musica contemporanea neoclassica per il pianoforte? È abbastanza impegnativo trovare una buona etichetta, no?
Quali sono le tue influenze musicali?
Innanzitutto, i miei genitori. Cantavano e fischiettavano sempre in casa. C’era sempre musica in riproduzione. Ho avuto un insegnante di pianoforte molto creativa e immaginativa. Era un italo-americana, ha incoraggiato il mio desiderio di creare arrangiamenti per la musica che conoscevo, ero piuttosto giovane. Facevo arrangiamenti all’età di 7 anni e componevo melodie quando avevo otto o nove anni.
Hai un particolare brano di cui sei più orgogliosa? A me piace molto “First Dance”. È meraviglioso.
Grazie! Ho alcuni pezzi a cui sono particolarmente affezzionata: “West Bank Serenade” e “Ireland” sono entrambi i più ambiziosi, e “A Song for Jennie” la preferita dal pubblico. Nel brano “First Dance” c’è una natura semplice e tranquilla, quasi più sugli spazi che tra le note, molte persone sono attratte da quel brano che fa parte dell’album “Another Time, Another Place”. Molti ballerini hanno gareggiato con il valzer, “Walk with Me” e questo mi rende molto orgogliosa. Amo vedere la gente che balla sulla mia musica.
Come componi? Senti un tema musicale nella tua mente o è più basato sulla creazione da sensazioni?
È un mistero! A volte mi sveglio con un’idea musicale. A volte sono ispirata da un pensiero o da un sentimento, o dalla natura del giorno. Spesso mi trovo in giardino e le idee musicali iniziano a scorrere. Ho sempre musica nella mia testa.
I tuoi brani sono tutti sul pianoforte? Ne possiedi uno a casa?
A casa ho una bellissimo Steinway. Ho pubblicato 17 albums la maggior parte sono di pianoforte solo. Altri sono pianoforte con ensemble (chitarra, violoncello, violino, percussioni, corno inglese) e alcuni includono voci.
Sei una eccellente composititrice e pianista, puoi dare qualche consiglio a tutti i giovani musicisti?
Grazie! Suggerisco loro di trovare il modo per poter suonare ogni giorno… o il più spesso possibile. Puoi avere grandi sogni, ma non c’è niente che possa sostituire il tuo impegno al pianoforte. Può essere utile anche far parte di un gruppo o crearne uno in modo da poter suonare dal vivo davanti alla gente.
Cosa fai prima di un concerto? Cosa fai per rilassarti?
Eseguo il mio programma ogni giorno e faccio anche una grande quantità di “pratica mentale”, il che significa andare oltre la musica che ho in testa. Faccio questo in larga parte sui voli.
Hai qualcosa da dire ai tuoi fans italiani?

Nella tua pluriennale carriera hai pubblicato diciassette albums. Prossimo progetto?
Sto registrando questo mese! Sto lavorando ad un tipo “sognante” di album che vuole essere una serie di brevi “etudes” che invochino il rilassamento e la calma.
Ultime due domande e grazie per questa intervista. Verrai un giorno a suonare in Italia? Tuo nonno era un flautista e suonò nella NBC Symphony Orchestra sotto la direzione di Arturo Toscanini. Possiamo dire che in te ci sia un po’ d’Italia, anche se sei un americana?
Mi piacerebbe venire in Italia … e c’è un po’ di italiano in tutti, non è così?

Hello Robin and Welcome to Jalo. How are you?
I am doing great, thank you!
You are well known as a talented pianist, composer and author. At what age did you start getting involved with music?
I began taking piano lessons at the age of seven.
Your sound is unique, when listening to your pieces, there are classical, new age, minimalist music. What genre would you say your music belongs to?
You put that very well. I would also add that pop music had a strong influence on me. I grew up not far from New York City, and my parents loved Broadway musicals. I grew up listening to a lot of soundtracks from film and theater. I think the music I create blends all of these influences. I love a good melody line, but I also love the structure of classical music, and feeling of impressionistic music and the feeling of new age. I would say that I create contemporary neo-classical music for piano? It is pretty challenging to come up with a good label, isn’t it?
What and who are your musical influences?
First and foremost, my parents. They were always singing and whistling in the house. There was always music playing. I had a very creative and imaginative first piano teacher. She was Italian-American she encouraged my desire to create arrangements for well known music when I was quite young. I was arranging music at age 7 and composing melodies by the time I was eight or nine.
Do you have a particular piece of yours of which you’re most proud? I love “First Dance”. It’s wonderful.

I have a few pieces that I am especially fond of. “West Bank Serenade” and “Ireland” are both bigger ambitious pieces, and “A Song for Jennie” has been an audience favorite for a long while. There is a quiet simple nature to a piece like “First Dance” which is almost more about the spaces in between the notes and it seems a lot of people are gravitating toward that piece from the album (Another Time, Another Place.) Many ballroom dancers have competed to my waltz, “Walk with Me” and that makes me very proud. I love seeing people dancing to my music.
How does music come to you? Do you hear a musical theme in your mind, or is it more about creating a feeling?
It’s a mystery! Sometimes I wake up with a musical idea. Sometimes I am inspired by a thought or feeling, or the nature of the day. Often I am in the garden weeding and musical ideas begin to flow. I always have music in my head it seems!
Do all your compositions on the piano? Do you own one at home?
I have a beautiful Steinway grand at home. I have 17 recordings and most of them are solo piano. Others are piano with ensemble (guitar, cello, violin, percussion, English horn) and a select few include some vocals.
You are a great composer and pianist. Can you give any advice or tips to any young musicians?
Thank you! I would suggest that aspiring musicians find a way to play their instrument every day..or as often as they can. You can have big dreams, but there is nothing that can take the place of putting time into your instrument. Joining or creating a group where you can perform in front of your peers is also very helpful.
How do you prepare before a concert and what do you do to relax?
I run through my program each day and I also do a great deal of “mental practice” which means I go over the music in my head. I do this a good deal on airplanes.
Do you have anything to say to your Italian fans?
I really hope there will be an opportunity for me to come to Italy to perform! I have never been to your beautiful country. In the meantime, I invite all of you to listen to me on Spotify Radio, Pandora Radio and download my music on iTunes!
In your multi-year career you have released seventeen albums. What is your next project?
I am actually recording this month! I am working on a “dreamy” type of album which is meant to be a series of short “etudes” that invoke relaxation and calmness.
Last two questions and thank you for this interview. Will you come one day to play in Italy? Your grandfather was a flutist and played in the NBC Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Arturo Toscanini. Can we say that there is a bit of Italy in you, even if you are an American?
I would love to come to Italy…and there is a bit of Italian in everyone, isn’t there?
